Eines der Merkmale, das London so besonders für mich macht, ist das jeder Stadtteil seinen eigenen Character hat. Gemeinsam bilden die Stadtteile London mit all seinen unterschiedlichen Facetten. Den Großteil meiner Zeit in London habe ich in Angel gearbeitet, Teil von Islington und eine Straße entfernt von King’s Cross. Wenn Mieten dort nicht so wahnsinnig teuer wären, hätte ich dort auch sehr gerne gewohnt.

Angel wurde nach dem „Angel Inn“ benannt, dass früher an der Ecke war, wo jetzt die Co-Op Bank eine Filiale hat.

Fun Facts:

Die Angel Tube Station hat die längste Rolltreppe aller Underground Stationen und die viertlängste Rolltreppe in ganz Westeuropa (60m lang, 27m Höhenunterschied). Die Rolltreppe hochzulaufen ist eine nicht unbeachtliche Herausforderung, die jedoch sicher dabei hilft fit zu bleiben!

Der Platz am Angel Central (früher das N1 Shopping Plaza) wird von der „Angel Wings“ Skulptur dominiert, welche 2003 Wolfgang Buttress erschaffen wurde. Die Flügel sind 15m hoch und 18m weit und gewann einst den nationale Architektur Foundation Wettbewerb. Ich finde es ist eine gelungene Interpretation des Engel-Themas. Obgleich statisch, vermitteln die Flügel ein Gefühl von Bewegung und sie wirken nicht zuletzt aufgrund ihrer Größe einfach majestätisch.

Angel Islington findet man auch in der britischen Version des Monopoly Spiels. Dort ist es ironischerweise am drittbilligsten. Heutzutage schwer vorstellbar, aber während des 20. Jahrhunderts war Islington in der Tat ein günstiges Pflaster, bis die Hauspreise in den 1980ern aufgrund der Gentrification zu steigen begannen. Zudem ist es angeblich das einzige Monopoly Feld das nach einem Gebäude benannt wurde.

Was immer ihr sucht, Angel kann euch alles bieten:

• Shopping im Angel Central – hier findet man z.B. H&M, French Connection, Oasis, Gap, Rituals und Muji und weitere Geschäfte entlang der Upper Street. Alles etwas kleiner, aber auch mit weitaus weniger Menschenmassen als auf der Oxford Street.
• Einen Markt auf der Chapel Market Straße
• Jede Menge an Restaurants auf der Upper Street bis hoch zur Highbury & Islington Station als auch auf der Essex Road. Hier findet man wirklich für jeden Geschmack und für jeden Geldbeutel etwas!
• Kultur: Vue cinema und der Screen on the Green cinema, King’s Head theatre pub, Almeida theatre (Ralph Fiennes hat hier in Richard III im August 2016 gespielt), Sadler’s Wells theatre (bekannt al seines der Welt berühmtesten Tanztheater), die O2 Academy
• Der Kanal, den man den ganzen Weg an King’s Cross vorbei über Camden Town, Regent’s Park, Little Venice und noch weiter westlich entlang spazieren kann

Meine persönlichen Favoriten:

• The Breakfast Club auf der Islington High Street: eine der Filialen des Kultcafés
• Miz en Bouche in der St. John Street: ein süßes kleines französisches Bistro
• The Library Pub auf der Upper Street: traditionelle und gemütliche Pubatmosphäre

One of the things that make London so special for me, is that every borough adds its own character and all together they make up this amazing city with all its different faces. For most of my time in London, I worked in Angel, an area in the borough of Islington, just down the road from King’s Cross and if it wasn’t so expensive, I would have loved to also live there.

Fun Facts:

Angel was named after the Angel Inn, which was situated on the corner where the Co-Op is now situated. Angel tube station has the longest escalators on the Underground, and the fourth longest set of escalators in Western Europe (60m long, vertical rise of 27m). Climbing it is quite a challenge but will keep you fit for sure.

The Angel Central (previously N1 Shopping Plaza) square is dominated by the Angel Wings sculpture, which was created in 2003 by Wolfgang Buttress. It is 15m high, and 18 metres across and was the winning entry in the national Architecture Foundation competition. I think it’s a nice interpretation of the Angel theme. To me the wings convey a sense of movement and look majestic not least due to the sculpture’s size.

The Angel Islington features on the British version of Monopoly where it is the third cheapest property. Hard to imagine nowadays but for most of the 20^th century properties in Islington really were downmarket and only began to rise in the 1980s following its gentrification. It is also said to be the only site on the board that is named after a building.

As an area, Angel has it all:

• Shopping facilities in Angel Central including for example H&M, French Connection, Oasis, Gap, Rituals and Muji and further shops along Upper Street. All a bit smaller but also a lot less busy than on Oxford Street.
• A market on Chapel Market
• Lots of dining facilities both on Upper Street all the way up to Highbury & Islington station as well as on Essex Road. You’ll find any cuisine and something to suit any budget here.
• Culture: Vue cinema and the Screen on the Green cinema, King’s Head theatre pub, Almeida theatre (Ralph Fiennes played Richard III here in August 2016), Sadler’s Wells theatre (renowned as one of the world’s leading dance venues), the O2 Academy
• The canal that you can walk along all the way past King’s Cross to Camden Town, Regent’s Park, Little Venice and beyond

My personal favourites:

• The Breakfast Club on Islington High Street: one of the branches of this café that has become cult
• Miz en Bouche on St. John Street: a cute little French bistro
• The Library Pub on Upper Street: traditional and comfy pub atmosphere
