Carnaby Street (DE)

Die Carnaby Street befindet sich im Norden des Stadtteils Soho. Zwischen Oxford Street, Charing Cross Road, Leicester Square und Picadilly Circus erstreckt sich ein buntes Viertel. Carnaby Street erreicht man am besten durch die U-Bahn-Stationen Oxford Circus und Piccadilly Circus, die sich ganz in der Nähe befinden.
Es stimmt, dass sich Kreative und Bohemiens schon im frühen 19. Jahrhundert in der Carnaby Street aufhielten, die von Theatern und Galerien umgeben ist.
Aber Geschichte gemacht hat sie erst in den 60er Jahren als Treff der „Flower Power Generation“. Die Sängerin Peggy March widmete ihr mit „Was so alles geschieht in der Carnaby Street“ im Jahre 1969 sogar ein Lied.
Wer hip war, besuchte die ausgefallenen Boutiquen der Straße. Die bekanntesten waren: John, Lady Jane, I was Lord Kitchener’s Valet und John Stephen. Der Modedesigner Stephen war mit seinen super coolen Läden auch als „König der Carnaby Street“ bekannt. Die Rolling Stones, die Beatles und Jimi Hendrix gehörten zu seiner Kundschaft.
In den 70er und 80er Jahren war Carnaby ein Ziel für diverse Subkulturen: von Punk bis Rock über Gothic.
Auch noch heute könnt ihr in der Fußgängerzone kleine Boutiquen und ausgefallene Modeläden besuchen. Ich persönlich finde sie sogar noch besser als die Oxford Street, die völlig überlaufen und von großen Ketten vereinnahmt ist.

Carnaby Street is a pedestrianised shopping street in the City of Westminster, central London, located in the Soho district, near Oxford Street and Regent Street.
Long considered as one of London’s cool streets, Carnaby Street has been the centre for trends such as the hippies, mods and punks over the years. Situated in Soho, just off Regents Street and steps from Oxford Street.
Anyone who was ‘hip’ came to Carnaby to hang out, and get kitted out in a vast array of brilliant boutiques. There was Lord John, Lady Jane, I was Lord Kitchener’s Valet and John Stephen – once known as the ‘King of Carnaby Street’ with his string of super cool shops under different names. As well as making the sharp suits for the 60’s Mods, Stephen’s clientele included the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.
Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s Carnaby continued to be a real destination for youth subcultures from punks – including The Sex Pistols – to rockers and goths.
